GEORGE WENDELL HILL, Sr.

Passed away on February 13, 2021 at the Violet Springs Health Campus in Pickerington, OH, after a short illness. George was born on January 16, 1941 in Charleston WV. He was the 5th of 9 children born to the late George Franklin and Leanna Mason Hill. George received his education in the Kanawha County School system where he attended Paul Lawrence Dunbar Elementary School, Cabell Junior High School and Stonewall Jackson High School Class of ‘59, where he played basketball under Coach Barnhart. On July 17, 1942, he married Mary Martha Hardy and to this union was born George Wendell Hill, Jr. and Rachel Beatrice Hill. George was also the father to Jarrette Paul Lewis and Luverdia Denyce Holland. George retired with 20 years of service from the United States Air Force (USAF). He was a part of the Recovery Team in Vietnam. While in the service he was decorated with following commendations: USAF Commendation Medal, USAF Good Conduct Medal with Five Oak Leaf Clusters, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, USAF Longevity Service Award Ribbon with Four Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal, and USAF Outstanding Unit Award. The family often heard him say, “I’ve been around the world 2 times!” He loved to listen to jazz, dance, line dance and spend time with his family and friends. He was also a dedicated Washington Redskins fan. George was a member of the former Greater Liberty Temple C.O.G.I.C., Columbus, OH. George is preceded in death by his parents, his former spouse, his brothers Alfred Hill and George “Big George” Hill both of Indianapolis, IN. James Thomas “Tommy” Hill of Columbus, OH. Sisters Mary Frances Hill Parker (Clarence) Of Indianapolis, IN. Truscilla Rebekah Hill Berger (Paul) and Elsie Lee Hill Anderson (Major) both of Columbus, OH. Brother in Law Matthew Russell, Sr. of Charleston, WV. George leaves to cherish his memory his children George W Hill, Jr (Gloria), Rachel B Hill both of Charleston WV. Jarrette P. Lewis of Tacoma, WA; and Luverdia D Holland of Atlanta, GA. Sisters Carolyn Russell of Atlanta, GA. Eunice Hill Hall of Canal Winchester, OH. Brenda Hill Hardy of Charleston, WV; and Nina K Hill of Columbus, OH. Brother Leonard “Ike” Hill (Patricia) of Morgantown, WV. Sisters in Laws Roberta L Hill-Smith of Charleston, WV, and Christine Hill of Columbus, OH. Eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren, a host of family members, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, friends, and co-workers.
